Alamo Heights Dance Academy

Class Progressions, Ages & Descriptions

At AHDA, we offer fun, age-appropriate dance classes that grow with your child from toddler to teen. Our dancers build skills and confidence as they move up through levels with the help of supportive, skilled instructors.

We also offer combo and variety classes for dancers who are still exploring what they love or who enjoy a mix of styles.

Fall Show-Off: December 20th (informal)

Spring Recital: May (formal)

Class Progression

Classes are designed to move from Introductory → Beginner → Intermediate → Advanced.

Some classes may require instructor recommendation or a skills placement test for Levels II and III if new to AHDA or requesting advancement.

Ballet

Progression: Ballet Babies → Intro → Ballet I → Ballet II → Ballet III

Focus: Technique, posture, grace, and classical movement.

Dress Code:

  • Girls: Black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers (strings tied and tucked)
  • Boys: White t-shirt, black pants, black ballet slippers
  • Hair: Up and secure in a bun or ponytail

• Ballet Babies (Ages 2.5–3y 11m)

A gentle introduction to ballet that focuses on movement, rhythm, and fun. Perfect for our youngest dancers exploring a studio setting.

• Ballet Intro (Ages 4–6)

Beginner ballet with an emphasis on basic positions, posture, and creative expression. Great for dancers ready for more structure.

• Ballet I (Beginner Ages 7+)

Classical ballet technique for new dancers or those building a strong foundation in alignment, balance, and grace.

• Ballet II (Intermediate 7+)

For dancers with prior ballet experience. Focus on vocabulary, center work, and barre strength.

• Ballet III (Advanced 7+)

Advanced ballet class for committed dancers working on leaps, turns, extensions, and performance artistry.

Jazz

Jazz

Progression: Jazz I → Jazz II → Jazz III

Focus: Rhythm, isolations, kicks, turns, performance power.

Dress Code:

  • Girls: Black leotard, black leggings or jazz pants, black jazz shoes
  • Boys: Black fitted shirt, black pants, black jazz shoes
  • Hair: Pulled away from face

• Jazz I (Ages 7–9)

High-energy intro to jazz with basic technique, isolations, and across-the-floor combinations.

• Jazz I (Ages 10+)

Beginner jazz for older students. Builds musicality, coordination, and expressive movement.

• Jazz II (Intermediate 7+)

For dancers with solid basics. Focuses on stylized movement, jumps, and turns.

• Jazz III (Advanced 7+)

Advanced jazz technique with layered choreography, precision, and performance quality.

Hip Hop

Progression: Hip Hop Intro → Hip Hop I → Hip Hop II → Hip Hop III

Focus: Grooves, footwork, freestyle, performance flair.

Dress Code:

  • Comfortable, athletic-style clothes
  • Clean sneakers or hip hop shoes
  • Hair pulled away from face

• Hip Hop Intro (Ages 4–6)

A fun, age-appropriate class introducing rhythm, grooves, and beginner footwork in a playful setting.

• Hip Hop I (Ages 7-9)

Hip Hop I (10+)

Street-style beginner hip hop for kids ready to pop, lock, and groove with confidence.

• Hip Hop II (Intermediate 7+)

Intermediate hip hop choreography and freestyle development for students ready for more complexity.

• Hip Hop III (Advanced 7+)

Fast-paced hip hop for experienced dancers focusing on sharp execution, performance, and style.

Variety Dance

Includes:

  • Mini Movers (Parent & Tot: Ages 18mo–3)
  • Tiny Dancers (Ages 4–6)
  • Dynamic Variety Dance (Ages 7-9, 10+)
  • Dance Team Prep (Middle & High School)

Focus: Fun blends of ballet, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, pom & more. Great for dancers who love variety or are exploring their favorite styles.

Dress Code:

  • Girls: Black leotard, leggings, jazz shoes
  • Boys: Black shirt, black athletic pants, jazz shoes
  • Mini Movers: Parents wear comfy clothes to move in

• Mini Movers: Parent & Tot Dance With Me (Ages 18 months–3 years)

Interactive class where a caregiver joins their little dancer in exploring music, rhythm, and simple movement.

• Tiny Dancers (Ages 4–6)

A mix of ballet, jazz, and creative movement. Ideal for preschool and early elementary dancers.

• Dynamic Variety Dance (Ages 7–9)

A multi-style class that may introduce Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, Pom, Lyrical, Musical Theater and more, perfect for dancers exploring what style fits best.

• Dynamic Variety Dance (Ages 10+)

Continued exploration of multiple dance genres in a judgment-free zone that allows dancers to discover their passion.

• Dance Team Prep (Middle School: Ages 11–14)

Training for aspiring dance team members with a focus on performance, precision, and audition-ready choreography.

• Dance Team Prep (High School: Ages 13–18)

Designed for dancers preparing for or currently on high school dance teams. Technique, routines, and teamwork emphasized.

Gymnastics / Dance Combo

Ages 4–5 & 6+

Half the class is held at AHDA, and the other half is next door at Alamo Heights Gymnastics Academy. There's a convenient indoor walkway between facilities.

Focus: Intro to tumbling and dance — balance, coordination, and fun!

Dress Code:

  • Girls: Black leotard, black leggings or shorts, bare feet or ballet slippers

• Combo Gymnastics & Dance (Ages 4–5)

Blends basic tumbling skills with dance movement to improve coordination and flexibility in a playful class.

• Combo Gymnastics & Dance (Ages 6+)

A fusion of acro, jazz, and gymnastics designed to build strength, agility, and confidence.

Special Needs Dance

Special Needs Dance

Ages 4–6, 7–10, 10–Adult, & SA Fire Day Hab

Supportive, sensory-friendly dance for all abilities. These dancers may also have opportunities to perform and represent our studio around San Antonio.

Dress Code:

  • Comfortable clothes for movement
  • Optional classic dance look for ages 4–9:
    • Girls: Black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers
    • Boys: White t-shirt, black pants, black ballet slippers
  • Shoes optional for ages 10–Adult

• Special Needs (Ages 4–6)

Sensory-friendly dance class with structured movement, musical play, and creative expression for young dancers.

• Special Needs (Ages 7–10)

Age-appropriate movement and music activities that promote balance, rhythm, and joy in dance.

• Special Needs (Ages 10–Adult)

Supportive environment for dancers of all abilities to experience the joy of movement, rhythm, and performance.

• SA Fire Day Hab

Day program class for adults with special needs. Focused on physical activity, rhythm, and expressive movement.

Acro Dance

Levels: Acro I & Acro Advanced (Ages 6+)

Focus: Tumbling skills + dance transitions. Builds strength, flexibility, and control.

Dress Code:

  • Girls: Black leotard, footless tights or leggings, barefoot
  • Boys: Black fitted shirt, athletic pants, barefoot

• Acro I (Ages 6+)

Introduction to basic acrobatic tricks blended with dance. Focuses on flexibility, strength, and safety.

• Acro Advanced (Ages 6+)

For experienced students mastering more challenging acro skills and combining them seamlessly with choreography.

Focus: Turns, leaps, alignment, and strength building across all genres.

Dress Code:

  • Girls: Black leotard, pink or black tights, ballet or jazz shoes

Non-performance class to improve turns, leaps, alignment, and overall strength across all genres.
